Peter wrote two letters to congregations on the fringes of the Roman Empire during a turbulent and dangerous time for the Christian church. In July of 64 A.D. Rome was burned. Emperor Nero took this opportunity to blame the Christians, whom he intensely disliked, for the burning of Rome, and many were martyred. Peter himself was crucified later that year. At some time during the months before his death, Peter wrote these epistles to churches in five distant provinces so that they would be prepared, strengthened and encouraged for the persecution that was to come. We Christians today face our own forms of persecution in a world that we are called to reach into for the sake of Jesus Christ and the gospel. Come, join Pastor Tim Wendelin as we read and digest Peter’s letters. In doing so, like Peter’s early readers, you too will find strengthening of your faith for the purpose of persevering in whatever struggles this life brings you. Through the work of the Holy Spirit by God’s gifts of grace and forgiveness, you will be blessed, encouraged and fulfilled as you live your life for Him.
